On the Hunt for a New Job? There’s No Place Like Asda

Asda state they are always changing to meet the needs of their customers. As the recession starts to hit hard and more and more people lose their jobs'the 7000 job creation it plans for 2009 might just be what its customers do actually need right now.

The announcement made today (28th January) states they will create 7000 jobs this year and plan to recruit 3000 people who have experienced long-term unemployment for existing vacancies. The move should provided much needed help to those who have been out of work for more than six months and are finding it increasingly harder to get employed.

The job creations are due to Asda's plans to open 9 new food stores, 5 new living outlets, 15 extensions to its current stores along with the expansion of their home shopping business and through organic growth. It is also investing in its pharmacies and optical centres nationwide. The plans kick start this March with the opening of a brand new Asda superstore in Bury St Edmonds.

Staff seem to be happy at Asda as they have impressively achieved one of the highest retention figures within the retail industry with on average every colleague gaining four years experience serving customers and has recently recorded its lowest ever absence rates.

"Our track record of recruiting and retaining people is second to none, which is why we have the lowest turnover and most motivated workforce in British retail." Andy Bond, President and CEO of ASDA.

With highest levels of unemployment in the UK since 1997 it is reassuring to know there are still companies hiring and are trying to help those people who need it most.

Other new opportunities are set to come up within the other large supermarkets chains.  Tesco's plan to create 10,000 new jobs this year with new stores that are to be opened. Sainsbury's 5,000 with 50 new convenience stores and a small number of new supermarkets it is planning to open. Waitrose expansion drive is to create 4,000 new jobs and Iceland is hoping to create 2,500 jobs due to buying 51 stores from former Woolworth's.
